Democratic - coffee in...the library??

Strangely enough, you are really not in doubt when you have that cup of coffee which comes close to a mind altering experience. And I do not just mean being high on a coffee buzz, but rather like going on a journey when drinking a cup of coffee.

After several whispers in the ear, I decided to follow my next lead, and find Democratic Coffee Bar. It is in the center of Copenhagen in the main library.

Now I know why people are raging about this place.  The coffee is quite an experience. Strangely though, when I arrived the smiling baristers were extremely eager to show off their homemade layer cake.  It is made as you order, so it really does not get any fresher than that.

I know that I said that the best coffee in town was at the Coffee Collective, but this place has just scored a tie. As I travel through the Copenhagen coffee scene, I do discover that there are actually several really good coffee joints around.  And this is one that must not be missed.

Kaffebar - put the good back in coffee

Granted that sometimes the hunt for coffee can lead one to far away places, but the residents of Valby have the cutest little coffee shop in their own back yard.

While running around in the center of Copenhagen looking for my next cup of coffee, someone sent me out to Valby, a twenty minute bike ride out past the city zoo and Frederiksberg gardens.  It was well worth the  travelling effort.

The coffee was really good...but I discovered that I was in the prescence of yet another world champion!  This time a champion in latte-art. So not only did I get a great cup of coffee...but I got a visual surprise when I got my coffee.
In this café you just feel good.  And after a little talk with Habib, I could not help but get the feeling that this place was not about the money....it was about doing something good.

By the way, did I mention that these guys are the Copenhagen Roasters? They do have a micro roastery just down the road, so each bean is practically handroasted. ≧◔◡◔≦

Coffee Collective - The hidden beans

Psssstt...I found the best coffee in town! ()   ..but this is just between me and you, because this is this towns' best kept secret.  So secret is it, that you have to pass through a café jungle of temptation before finding this café nested in an inconspicous little side street of Frederiksberg.
Space is not a problem. The café is situated in an old factory building and instead of jamming tons of tables and chairs in, they have kept this wonderful feel of openess and space.
The Coffee Collective roasts their own beans, and this is not at all a secret!  In fact the roastery is situated in the café behind a glass wall. The transparency is reftreshing and inviting.
But that's not all.  The coffee is an experience in itself! You have just got to try it.  It is the type of coffee that stops all time and demands your full attention. The guys working here are fully trained baristas and it shows (or tastes).
The service is exceptional! The people working here actually talk to the customers, something which can sometimes be a rare experience in Copenhagen.
Time enters another dimention.
This is the type of place I would go out of my way to hunt down if I really wanted to have a coffee experience.

Riccos - The spirit of North--West

The North - West has a cultural aspect attached to it; things happen as they happen, in the time that they happen and boasts a kind of "break free" lifestyle.

Stefansgade is a charming street situated in the North - West and here you can see thriving café scene in Copenhagen, with outside seating in the cheap, but functional bench and table fashion.

Riccos is just one of the many cafés here, but I chose it because they do roast their own coffee beans and was hoping to find a great cup of coffee.

People at Riccos certainly do look like they are enjoying themselves and there is a very laid back atmosphere.

Surprisingly enough there is an extra little room at the back of the café where there unfolds even more stories. You can tell that this is a place that the locals enjoy.

On a scale of 1 - 10, I would give the coffee a 7. The milk was too hot, giving the coffee a slightly bitter taste. This is not to say that the café could at other times make a good coffee.  The café does originate from the Ricco Café in Studiestræde in the centrum where the rumour has it that the coffee is really good.
Besides the fact that the coffee could have been a notch better, the café is really local and tells that local story.  It is worth a visit if your long for a little cup of freedom with a sprinkle of laid back attitude.
