Røde Roses - Kids welcome

Ever get the feeling that someone broke all the rules and got away with it? That's what happened here at Røde Roses café. The furniture doesn't match, the coffee comes in some kind of yellow ceramic blob of a cup and there are gossip magazines on the tables instead of the predictable Vogue and Design magazines.

In fact this feels like someone's living room, rather than a café in Copenhagen.  There are toys, on shelves, lamps on stands instead of hanging from the ceiling....and a certain atmosphere of...caos.

Children are welcome here.  In fact the café used to be a kindergarden that was threatened to be closed. The owners of the café bought it up and continued with the kindergarden while using the café to earn money to pay for the rent.  The children meet each morning at the café and drive off to a forrest or some other place for the day, and meet back at the café in the afternoon.

But the real question is, how is the coffee? Well the coffee is quite good.  Here they use Kontra beans and have experienced staff at hand.  Not all are trained  baristas, but they do know a deal about coffee.

The café is situated way back in the city burbs at the north side.  You need to go a little out of the way to find it, but once you do, you will find that it was way worth the trip.  It is located in a charming little oasis on a cobblestone street.  Here you can see some of the old Copenhagen and experience a young and artistic café scene.

Dag H - Coffee on the eastside

This Café is situated next to the Kontra Coffee micro roasters and gets its coffee and barista training from there. Dag H is a large restuarant/café with the mission of serving good coffee to many.

In my hunt for great coffee and a thriving café scene in Copenhagen, I generally skip those cafés where there is too much food and many tables. Can you really make good coffee and concentrate on a food menu, as well as running around to care for 50 customers at the same time

Dag H prides the quality of their coffee, and to be honest, the coffee is quite good here. The girls standing by to take your order and serve you at your table are friendly, but all the same, the café lacks that special atmosphere where you feel like you have entered into another world.  It is not that café I would sit and write my diary or read a good book.

This is more the type of place I would go for a good meal out, followed by a good cup of coffee, but not where I would sit and ponder over a cup of really good coffee.

Although the café lacks a certain individuality, it seems to churn out a menu of coffee and food at a high quality.  I wouldn't go to this place alone, but I would make sure I had someone with me to make the experience special.

Estate Coffee - coffee with identity

There are tons of cafés in the heart of Copenhagen, but how is the coffee? Don't you just hate that moment when you get your coffee and pay high prices, and then...the coffee is a flop?  Well this is certainly not the case at Estate Coffee.  These guys know what they are doing, and they do it well.

The atmosphere is...relaxed!  This could be.... my living room. With a quick look around I see that people are reading, writing and dating. I love it already!

And the coffee???  Yes!!!! This is one of those places where you can just see by the look of the people serving, that the coffee is good.  And don't be surprised, It is GREAT coffee here. It is a coffee with its own identity. It tells a story.

What more could you ask of for a grooving café in the heart of Copenhagen? A smile, a great coffee, and a café filled with people who make themselves feel at home.  That is the greatest combination for a café experience. Will I be coming back?  I sure will.  This is one of the coolest places to drink coffee in Copenhagen!

The Coffee Collective

If I was a cup of coffee, at the Coffee Collective, then I would be one of those coffees that was born in a house of nurture and patience.  I would be strong minded and sure about myself, because I would have been raised by confident and competent hands. If I was to drink that coffee, then I would be forced to pay attention, and nurture the experience in turn, thus giving that cup of coffee and its story, the time it demands of me to be listened to.

It's not just a matter of making a buck and churning those coffees out. It's not just about yelling orders across the  bar and finding some flakey half icecream sticks used to stir the coffee because the customers may just steal the spoons. No, this is about the coffee.  This is about the experience and this is about the atmosphere. It is worth the little walk around the back streets to find this place in the culturally extensive part of Copenhagen.  This lovely little shop is simplistic with a hidden little back room that houses even more tables.  The coffee is great and so it should. On the shelves you can see the many barista championship trophees won throughout the years, and there is a lovely laid back attitude in the café.  These guys know what they are doing, and the coffee is an experience, a story and a time spent well away from the rest of the world.
